Mortuus Sum/ Funeral Storm split 2012

Mortuus Sum and Funeral Storm are greek bm bands. It's difficult to talk about originality today, but both bands prove they have a great potential. The constant melody underneath the brutality is a commendable feat. Any bm purist who seeks out melody in chaos should give them a listen.

An Old Feeling

Some atmospheric/ ambient bm by the greek band, Arthar. 'An old feeling' was released in 2012, and it was a year ago that 'Encarved', their past record, came out. In the latest album, the overshadowing ambiance definitely provides us with a mystical and very spiritual listening experience. The vocals are often omitted for long periods and as with the guitars, they normally fade into the background, becoming a part of the furniture. Very interesting.

Lost Inside My Solitude

Life Unfair is an italian atmospheric/ dbm band. Their recent album, 'Lost inside my solitude' keeps being uploaded in the net and I understand why. Characterised by its sorrowful elegance, this is a journey of contemplative reflection.

November Loveless

Griefrain reminds me a lot of White Ward. They are both one-man dbm/ post-black bands and share a similar sound. But the russian Griefrain have some more experience in their back. 'Follow the dusk' was a nice album, and 'November Loveless' continues where we left off. It's a beautiful music adventure that everyone should try.

Like ghosts

Sonance is an ambient/sludge/doom/drone metal band from UK. I had no idea about them, but i will sure have them in mind from now on. 'Like ghosts' is an AMAZING album. It's heavy, it's noisy, it's violent. The vocals seem to blend so well with the (transcending) genres that the listener immerses himself into the breathtaking riffs and loud atmosphere. I still don't know how they do it. Although such a band could lose the game due to 'pushing' and re-re-re-editing music, they do sound really natural. Definitely check them out.

Deafheaven/ Bosse-De-nage split 2012

Both bands are GREAT. We all remember the promising works  'Roads to Judah' and 'III'.On the one hand, we have atmospheric blackgaze. On the other, bm with an affinity for shoegaze, post-hardcore, screamo. And now they meet...can we ignore such a result?

Ascencion

This is italian doom metal by Caronte. 'Ascencion' includes tracks of the band's previous record, 'Ghost Owl'. Using forgotten themes as occultism, the band engages again in litanies to myths and pagan deities, without any continuity of space and time. The sound production is deliberately confused and remains in low frequences, bewildering the listener, as the doom melodies go on...

http://www.facebook.com/ferociailluminata
http://www.myspace.com/caronteferociailluminata

Digressions

Ilydaen is an istrumental post-rock Belgian band formed in 2008. I'll tell this once more, the post-rock scene is chaotic and one band is usually repeating the other... Fortunately Ilydaen avoid the usual post-rock scheme 'serenity-explosion-calm again', and do let the listener be carried away by the strong, powerful emotion and passion.

http://www.ilydaen.be/
http://www.facebook.com/Ilydaen

RIITIIR

Enslaved again works the prog rock melodies and clean vocals, without losing the abrasive black metal aspects at all. RIITIIR is more experimental than their previous release, though. There are several different styles (prog, bm, doom, psychedelic) mixed together on any given song. Far away from the immediacy of 'Axioma Ethica Odini' or the sheer class of 'Ruun' ,RIITIIR will appeal for sure to all the prog fans.

Beyond The Skyline

Drowned in November is a one man post bm/blackgaze band from Argentina. It was founded a year ago by Antonio Sanna, and 'Beyond The Skyline' proves that the band is here to stay. Yet the real challenge is if it will finally stand out...

Nightside Emanations

This is orthodox bm, this is Finland, this is Behexen. The sound in 'Nightside Emanations' is not new. However, it doesn't get monotonous at all due to the slower, mid-tempo parts amid the high tensious blastbeats. In overall, their new record is well-rendered and pointed for the good song-writing and production.

Only The Ocean Knows

Well this is experimental/atmospheric bm with a strong shoegaze influence. I really liked this band's past album, but here they go a bit further down the post-rock path than I would like. That's why the harsh vocals often seem to be out of place. The result isn't so bad, but I'm afraid that Autumn For Crippled Children chose a path that doesn't suit them.

The Main As Well That Is Not Very

Side Of Despondency did chose a bizarre title for their new post-black album, 'The Main As Well That Is Not Very'... In general, you won't see any change in their music style. The whole album is dressed in melancholy. It actually invites the listener to make his own journey into melody.

Lacob's Ladder

Jacob's Ladder is Hell Militia's latest record. Listening to it, I felt trapped between the high speed, rough guitars and the worn, almost doomy parts. French seem to know the bm recipe...

Wetterkreuz

Wetterkreuz is the new album of the bm band Eis (ex Gast) . All tracks have some things in common, like wind blowing, snowstorm sounds and characteristic growls. That's why the listener feels freezing at times... Yet these anxious seconds easily turn to hypnotic ones, when the keyboards appear. Like it raw? Like Wetterkreuz!

Razorsunday

Depressive Black Metal by the finnish band Fornicatus. It's actually an older unreleased compilation. Raw sound, noisy background, muffled drumms and voice shrieks. In other words, classic Fornicatus at their best. Keep in mind, this isn't music for everyone.

The Abyss Is My Home EP

Meskalith is a funeral doom project by DoomHead. Listening to the 'Abyss Is My Home', i felt sinking in the dark, melancholic tones and the deep vocals. There is a great need of expression here, obvious from Doomhead's experimentation in art, too (http://bogyokrisztianart.blogspot.gr/). While musicians today strive to find ways to express themselves, he strives to fit in a world that the means of epression are scarce. Such underground acts definitely need our support.

Screws

I see this album being uploaded in more and more blogs and not without reason. The composer Nils Frahm shares some beautiful piano moments 'hiding' the breaking of his thumb successfully. Check out the clever track names. 'Do' 'Re' 'Mi' 'Fa' 'So' 'La' 'Si', while the first and the last one are named  'You' and 'Me'.

Paris, Ukraine, Sweden. Three different countries, one split. I must say i had only listened to Schematics For Gravity until now, and i was impressed. Post rock, post metal, sludge, screamo, crust, all in this split. The bands prove to be really talented, each its own way. EXCELLENT WORK!

The Scarred People

The swedish band Tiamat releases its 10nth album. Far away from their 90's classics, 'The Scarred People' remains death metal with strong goth and doom influences, but it's definitely less heavy than their past records. Edlund's voice keeps creating a dark climate and arousing various emotions, while the chorus keeps popping into the listener's mind. One thing for sure, the fans won't get disappointed.

Waking Season

Post rock by Caspian. In this album, the heavy drums, the synth screams and the guitar shrieks often give their place to quiet, relaxing moments... It's a tight album, but unfortunately we can hardly talk about innovation when listening to the post rock genre.

Loss

A few months have passed since 'wish' and Germ are back with 'loss', a prolongation( I'd call it) of their previous great work. This ep diverses A LOT OF different genres. Eccentric, psychedelic music that captures the listener. Masterpiece.

Wind

How could we forget 'Betep', Melankoli's previous album? 'Wind' also seems to stand out in the dbm/atmospheric black genre and it's worth a lot more than a few listens.

Tir N'a N'Og

'Becoming the deceased' was sure a post-black record that stand out. Celephais return with something different now, 'Tir N'a N'Og'. Lustre/ Feigur 2012

It was summer when Lustre's full-length was released and now we see their name again on the split with Feigur...not bad. Brunnen

The new album of Les Fleurs Du Mal is quite good. The hypnotic atmosphere remains, as long as the oppressive acts do. I feel though that the 'highlight' is being prepared for so long...but never happens. Let yourself travel from the ambient/black tracks to the pure keyboard ones and see if such tough music suits you.

Benighted In Sodom-A Premonition Of Miracles

I have nothing to say. Just listen to it NOW!

RuneEater

Blackened folk/doom metal by Velnias. I remember being stunned by 'Sovereign Nocturnal'. And yet RuneEater is more cohesive and well written. Guitar distortions, howls, and doom peaks are remarkable. All mixed with the folk element express the deep atmosphere of nature.

Redefining Darkness

Kvarforth is back. I must admit i love everything he's done( have deleted 'lots of girls gonna get hurt' from my mind). This doesn't mean though that his records' sound isn't getting catchier. In this album the acoustic and alternative rock parts are more and close to Opeth's and Katatonia's music. Maybe too close. The bass is great as always and there are breathtaking moments...but is this record a 'redefinition'? I'd say no. At least because, as long as its positive aspects are concerned,it keeps reminding me good but old works...

A Shadowplay For Yesterdays

Ok, one of my favorite bands. Great powerful bm music, great 19th century lyrics, great victorian atmosphere. A forest of stars confirm after 'opportunistic thieves of spring' that they can do it their own psucho, theatrical way.

Unterm Kreuze Zum Sarg

Ewig Finster is a new band with two demos in its history. I think they can have a brilliant future. Unlike the guy who posted the following song in utube, i love this sound quality.

Depressive black/ ambient release by Adramalech. Recommended.

They awoke to the scent of spring

Ok, for me this is atmospheric black at its best. I see two halves in the album, part 1& 2 on the one, and part 3&4 on the other with an ear-pleasant passage between them. Nachzeit slightly steps away from his previous work, when some parts are guitar-orientated. Anyway it's definitely worth listening.

Atra Mors

Evoken are here with a perfect funeral doom release! So they succesfully keep mixing funeral doom with other genres while combining heavy riffs and harsh vocals with melodic moments and some keyboards. Nevertheless death and black elements are to distinguish.

Eremita

What could sb say about Ihsahn? After Emperor , he has done an  excellent job and i believe 'after' was the highlight of it. Eremita could not be different. But at the same time this is the drawback. I feel that he could go one step further, evolve to sth more personal and new, but what i saw was a recycling of the -flawless for sure but-past. Weder nicht licht noch schatten

Wow. I don't know how verdunkeln do it, tying the listener tightly to their doomy riffs and calm but edgy repetitions. Sounding in the same time so desperate to make him feel isolated. And everything is done subtly, uncannily... in a few words, a must have.

A beautiful dystopia

Okera is a melodic death/ doom band from Australia.  I'd say that their new album consists of upbeat songs, haunting doom melodies, progressive metal sections. You will find a lot of experimentation here leading -luckily- to an harmonic result, their 'beautiful dystopia'.

Árstíðir lífsins 2012

Merrimack- The Acausal Mass

I don't feel at ease commenting on such a big swedish band, let alone when i am not really satisfied. The truth is i expected more inspiration and originality of them. I must say the recording is perfect, and anyway the tracks are not bad...actually this is what i mean. They are mediocre.

Sorcier Des Glaces & Monarque

Nice split, it shows a musical progression made by both bands. But while being optimistic about their new, ear-pleasant influences, i get somewhat annoyed by their choice of covers ('sacrifice?!')

Faustian echoes

Without having lost any of their inspitation and answering to those who claim that 'perfect' will necessarily become at least 'plain good', agalloch present their new record. The result is dark, epic, majestic. The folk element is combined with the frightening riffs and frantic drums, while the acoustic or spoken word parts are like they want to drag you into the melancholy of Faust's story. Tragedy mixed with art. This is what best describes 'faustian echoes'.

Pearls

Mutiara damansara's new album is surely different from their previous one. Their turn to clear  post rock/ shoegaze sound is obvious. Along with the great atmosphere and the strong songwriting, 'pearls' give the sense of dancing around the listener until they reach the depth of his soul.

Gall And Wormwood by Juvenile Baroque

Have you ever listened to music while being high?Probably yes. But have you ever listened to stoned instruments?!! Calm down, you weren't set on fire

Hypomanie, having been born and walked in the footsteps of alcest like so many others, is proved far more superior to its 'siblings'.This is in fact what the band showed with the album  'city in mono' and what its processor 'calm down...' confirms. This is a more personal release that reveals hypomanie's potential of going even further. Truly powerful, it causes many feelings alternating between distortion, heavy riffs and relaxing moments or repetition. A must have for post rock/shoegaze fans.

Súl ad Astral

Though not marked for its originality, this record is undoubtedly a highlight thinking of all these uninspiring post black releases. Characterised by the - often big but not boring- instrumental interludes(or beginnings), it combines blast beats and shrieking with softer moments. U should check it out.

Classic, cold bm sound with a dreary rhythm.

Cityscape drawn in black ink-Line 0 ep

This band has truly gained many fans. As an experimental post-metal record( the depressive element remains), their ep Line 0 is not bad. However, i still think that some sounds are not tied well together.
http://cityscapedrawninblackink.bandcamp.com/

Of  Strength And Solace

Being a fan of the band, i'd say this is typical good Lustre sound...Although Nachtzeit definitely knows the job, this ep leaves me in some parts with the sense that sth doesn't work.
http://www.myspace.com/lustreband

Aesthaetique

Endowed with excellent production, Esthaetique is a well performed record which has nothing to envy of other dbm albums. Rokkr succeds in creating a bleak atmosphere, while the black metal sound gives often its place to ambient moments.

Weeping Spirits-An ode to sorrow in man

Quite an improvement for the three bands. A split that will surely appeal to the fans of dbm.

Bosse-de-nage III

Moving from fast blasts to quieter moments, this record gathers many positive elements.
What about the...

-Mix of post rock and black metal? successful!
-Drumming? precise and powerful!
-Guitar and spoken word interludes? found where they should be!

Give it a listen.

http://bosse-de-nage.com/

Abske Fides

Death/doom sound, less funeral doom elements, feelings of despair; this is how i'd describe the first full length of the brazilian band.

Sound Desolations

When dreams become reality

First full-length album of desolate oasis... Seen it uploaded in a couple of blogs. One melancholic  post-black/shoegaze record, one promising band.

DRAPSNATT-Skelepht

Lux funestus 2012

I discovered this band listening to their split with astarot ,du temps perdu and neftarak... I still find their depressive black/post-black, ambient-like sound really interesting.

Since it's uploaded everywhere...

Shoegaze black metal/post-punk. Not sth innovative, but it holds its own.

A great release.

It's actually what we expected of a band with members of nachmystium, wolvhammer, twilight,  the gates of slumber and the atlas moth.
